Retargeting Integration Guide

Adjust x Smadex

This guide outlines the steps for marketers to successfully create and integrate their Retargeting campaigns within Adjust using Smadex. It is fundamental to follow these steps in order to be able to correctly set retargeting users and correct attribution settings.

A great part of this guide is inspired by Adjust documentation, as most of the settings must be done on their site. Links are provided across the guide to give better context on what to do on each of the steps.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • An active Adjust account with admin access.
  • An active Smadex account with access to Campaign Lab.
  • Enable non-attributed data sharing.
  • An integration done between Smadex and Adjust, with a given Tracking Group ID.

In case an integration has already been done for Mobile UA campaigns, Tracking Group ID will be the same as in that integration.

Step 1: Setting up the ad network

If Smadex has not been selected as an ad network yet, you must:

  1. Under Campaign Lab, select Partners.
  2. Select New partner > Smadex. Select Next to move to the next screen.
  3. In the App selection screen, choose the app for which you want to create the link, and enable the integration to share data with Smadex.
  4. Select Next.
Step 2: Modifying the attribution link
1. In the Data sharing screen, configure the integration between your network and Adjust, and choose data sharing options.
    1. You will skip this step if you’ve already configured data sharing for the network and you’re creating multiple links for an app.
  2. In the Link structure screen, do the following:
    1. If you’re running campaigns with partners that support cross-device measurement, choose the use case of your link.
    2. Provide the link name, and review the default link structure parameters provided by the network and update the values, if needed. If you’re creating multiple links for an app, ensure that you provide a unique link name for each additional link that you create.
  3. In the User destinations screen, configure a deep link, or add a redirect and fallback to your link.
  4. In the Attribution settings screen, set custom attribution settings for new and existing users. These attribution settings are available for clicks and impressions. If you skip this step, attribution settings that you chose during app setup will apply.
  5. In the Setup review screen, review your choices and make any changes as necessary.
  6. Select Create link to generate the click URL, impression URL, QR code, and link token, and enable data sharing, if set up.
Step 2.1: Creating and configuring Deep Links

For retargeting, deep links are essential to drive existing users directly to specific in-app content (e.g., a shopping cart or a specific product) rather than just opening the app’s home screen.

1. Generate the Deep Link in Campaign Lab: You can create a deep link based on your existing Smadex partner link or as a standalone custom link:

  • Navigate to Campaign Lab: In your Adjust dashboard, go to Campaign Lab and select either Partners (to use your Smadex link) or Custom links.
  • Access the Link URLs: Select your Smadex link to open its details, then go to the Link URLs tab.
  • Use the Deep Link Generator: Under the Deep Link Variations section, select New deep link. Adjust will prefill the app and campaign parameters.
  • Set the Destination: Select In-app screen and enter the specific location (path) where users should land.

2. Configure Redirections and Fallbacks: If a user clicks your retargeting ad but does not have the app installed (e.g., they uninstalled it), you must define where they should go:

  • Redirect (Optional): You can set a Custom URL to send users to a mobile website instead of an app store.
  • Fallback: If no custom redirect is set, Adjust defaults to sending the user to the relevant App Store to reinstall the app (Deferred Deep Linking).

3. Append the Deep Link Parameter: If you are manually modifying your Adjust link, you can add the deep link destination directly using the deep_link parameter.

  • Example Parameter: deep_link=myapp://product_page/123
  • Function: This parameter overrides all other redirects and tells Adjust exactly where to send the user within the app.

Important Note: To ensure Adjust correctly attributes these deep link clicks as “Reattributions,” your developers must call the processDeeplink method (Android) or the equivalent appWillOpenURL (iOS) within the Adjust SDK

Step 3: Testing, validation & troubleshooting

Copy over the view-through tracking link (the “Impression URL” provided by Branch) to the Smadex platform. Ensure you map the Smadex macros correctly to the corresponding Branch parameters to ensure granular reporting.

Step 5: Testing, Validation & Troubleshooting
  1. Share your links with Smadex. Smadex will perform a test install to confirm everything is in place.
  2. In case the test install is not successful, either the initial integration is not correct, or any step of this guide was not applied correctly. Review all the steps and make sure it’s all in place. You can also check Adjust documentation on how to create retargeting links.
